Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节, also known as the Mooncake Festival or Moon Festival is one of the biggest celebrations in the Chinese community after Chinese New Year. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunar calendar (around September - October). True to its name, it's held to appreciate the full moon & celebrated with the family through delicious dinners, lighting of paper lanterns (great fun for kids) and most importantly, mooncakes! Best served with tea, mooncakes are traditional Chinese pastries. Remember to wish the elders with a simple mid-autumn festival greeting, "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" or 中秋快乐.
Types of Mooncakes
Mooncakes are a must-get Mid-Autumn Festival food. These palm-sized pastries have a outer layer with a filling of sweet bean paste and/or fruits, nuts & egg yolk. Traditionally, they come in the Baked Mooncake variety with a golden-brown crust and flavour combinations like red bean paste & egg yolk and lotus seed paste with egg yolk. Over the years, Chinese pastry chefs have modernised these pastries with scrumptious new varieties like:
- Jelly Mooncake: bouncy agar-agar jelly outer shell with red bean/lotus seed paste + fruits/nuts/egg yolk (serve at room temperature)
- Snow Skin Mooncake: soft delicate outer shell with red bean/lotus seed paste/custard paste + fruits/nuts/egg yolk (serve chilled)
- Ice Cream Mooncake: snow skin/ice cream outer shell with yoghurt/ice cream filling (serve frozen)
- Durian Mooncakes: baked/snow skin/ice cream shell filled with durian paste/custard (D24, Musang King)
- Yam Mooncakes: baked/snow skin/ice cream shell with yam paste/custard
