Your Q&As On Condolence Flowers
For condolence flowers, you should start picking your flowers as soon as you get news of the passing. If you can, check with the deceased’s family on the date, time and place of the funeral or memorial service so your delivery will arrive at a suitable time.
Note that flowers are welcome for certain religions and not suitable for others. To be on the safe side, check with the grieving family if sending flowers would be a welcome gesture.
Protestant Send flowers.
Funerals and memorial services commemorate the deceased’s mortal life and celebrate their reunion with God. These are usually conducted by a minister or pastor in the presence of family, friends and close acquaintances. Flowers can be delivered to the deceased’s home, funeral home or the burial site. Generally, all flower types and colours are accepted.
Catholic Send flowers.
Funerals are usually preceded by a vigil or wake in church, where family, friends and the parish can pay their respects and say a final farewell. Flowers can be delivered to the church (location of the wake), funeral home or the burial site. Usually, most flower types and colours are suitable but most go for white.
Buddhist Send flowers.
Conducted by monks in the deceased’s home or funeral home. Family members of the deceased wear white and friends wear black as a sign of respect. Go for white funeral flower arrangements unless the deceased is above 80 years old, in which case you can use red or other more cheerful colours.
Muslim Check with the deceased’s family on flowers.
Muslim funerals are time sensitive and the practice is to bury the deceased as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours. Close family members of the same gender as the deceased will perform the funeral rites, including preparing the body for burial. As simplicity and minimalism is one of the central concepts of Islam, flowers are usually not given.
Hindu Send flowers.
Hindu funerals are held within one day after death and conducted by a Hindu priest in the deceased's home. Funeral attendees usually wear casual white clothes. Flowers can be sent to the deceased’s home. Usually, most flower types and colours are suitable.
If you were a close friend of the deceased, perhaps you may want to choose flowers that he/she loved. You can also choose more understated colour variants of those flowers. However, as a general guide, here are some flowers that are suitable for conveying your condolences.
White lilies are associated with heaven, purity of the soul and rebirth.
Carnations could be white (pure love and innocence), red (admiration) or pink (remembrance).
Chrysanthemums convey death and mourning.
For a wider range of colours, go for Roses. White roses for purity and innocence; red for respect, love and courage; pink for love and grace; crimson for grief and sorrow; and yellow for friendship
Orchids are also a good option. Usually white Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids are used to represent sympathy and eternal life.
